The Day of Russia celebrated with a tennis racket

Recently I've visited Sochi and was surprised to see that they do not only get ready to the Olympic games in 2014 but also carry out other tournaments. Here is an article about a tenis tournament which I was happy to be present at.

Sunzha Group, with organizational support and assistance of the City Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Sochi carried out Open Tennis Tournament, which took place June 12-14, 2009 at modern tennis courts in Sunzha’s property.
The Tournament was timed to the Day of Russia celebrated on June 12, as well as to the 100th anniversary of Sochi resort on June 14.
At present the renovation of the courts is fully completed which gives tennis lovers an opportunity to train on the world class tennis courts. Before the renovation, Ellips Ltd., part of Sunzha Group, allowed children’s sport schools to train their young sportsmen on the courts free of charge. Therefore, now Sunzha laid down an aim before Ellips management to establish a professional world class tennis school on the basis of their sports centre.
Executive and legislative authorities, Russian State Duma and City Council deputies took part in pair competitions, as well as businessmen, both local ones and those who were on business or a holiday in Sochi at that period of time.
The Tournament was indented to demonstrate social responsibility of business as it united representatives of sport and culture, businessmen and authorities, Sochi citizens and its guests. This sports event is supposed to raise people’s interest in doing sports as well as increase Sochi’s status as a future sporting capital of Russia.
Karapet Markaryan and Andrey Karpov took the first prize which made up 100 000 rubles. Half of the sum was transferred to establishment of the new tennis school. Konstantin Sorokin and Vitaliy Izotkin ended up second.
